Proofreading techniques seem to mystify many people — but this does not have to be the case. Most professional-level proofreading techniques are simply common sense. For example, if you have any document of short to medium length that you need proof read, you can read the document backwards, word for word. That’s right –read it backwards. The reason this works is because when we read any material which we have previously composed, our minds automatically “supply” any information which is not present. For this reason, when we read forwards, we will miss many mistakes. But when we read backwards, it forces us to concentrate on what is actually there, and we will be more inclined to notice any errors.
